Medication Guide: Tadalafil
What is Tadalafil?
Tadalafil is a prescription medication used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) in men and symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), which is an enlarged prostate gland. It belongs to a class of drugs called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors, which work by increasing blood flow to the penis and relaxing the muscles in the prostate and bladder.
Important Information:
Usage and Dosage: Take tadalafil exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider. Do not take more than the recommended dose or use it more frequently than instructed. The recommended starting dose for on-demand use in ED is 10mg, which may be adjusted based on your response and tolerability. For daily use in both ED and BPH, the usual dose is 5mg taken at the same time each day. Follow your doctor's guidance regarding the appropriate dosage for your specific situation.
Timing: For on-demand use, take tadalafil approximately 30 minutes before sexual activity. Its effects can last up to 36 hours, providing a longer window of opportunity for sexual activity. If you are taking tadalafil daily, it should be taken at the same time each day, regardless of sexual activity.
Sexual Stimulation: Tadalafil requires sexual stimulation to work effectively. It does not cause an automatic erection; rather, it helps facilitate an erection in response to sexual arousal.
Precautions and Contraindications: Inform your doctor about any pre-existing medical conditions you have, such as heart problems, low blood pressure, liver or kidney disease, or any history of priapism (prolonged and painful erections). Tadalafil is contraindicated if you are currently taking nitrates or nitric oxide donors, as it can cause a dangerous drop in blood pressure. It is also important to disclose any medications you are currently taking to avoid potential drug interactions.
Side Effects: Common side effects of tadalafil may include headache, facial flushing, indigestion, back pain, muscle aches, nasal congestion, and dizziness. These side effects are usually mild and temporary. However, if you experience any sudden vision or hearing loss, chest pain, or prolonged erections lasting more than four hours (priapism), seek immediate medical attention.
Alcohol and Grapefruit Juice: It is advisable to limit alcohol consumption while taking tadalafil, as excessive alcohol intake may reduce its effectiveness. Additionally, avoid consuming grapefruit or grapefruit juice, as it can interfere with the breakdown of tadalafil in your body and increase the risk of side effects.
Non-Medical Uses: Tadalafil is specifically designed to treat erectile dysfunction and symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia and should not be used for any other purposes.
Storage: Store tadalafil at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Keep it out of reach of children and pets.
