SARS-CoV-2 Antibody, IgG
This antibody test (IgG) indicates possible previous exposure to COVID-19 also known as coronavirus or SARS-CoV-2.
About the COVID-19 Antibody Test
The serology blood test detects the presence of human antibodies to the SARS-CoV-2 virus known as COVID-19. The common igG antibody will be present if you have been exposed to the coronavirus and your body has developed an immune response to the virus.
In some individuals who have been exposed to COVID-19, it may take up to 14 days after the onset of coronavirus symptoms to develop detectable antibody activity. For 91% of individuals, antibodies to the virus are present and can be detected within 8-13 days of exposure to the virus.
It is important to note, some people who have been exposed to SARS-CoV-2 will not exhibit symptoms or become ill, but will produce the antibodies for exposure to the virus.
At this time it is not known whether the body mounts a permanent immune response to the virus.
If you are feeling ill or are exhibiting symptoms associated with coronavirus, you must contact a healthcare provider or hospital for COVID-19 diagnostic testing and possible treatment options.
The COVID-19 antibody test is not meant to diagnose active coronavirus infection or illness from the virus.
When to Test for Antibodies
Symptom-Free for 10 Days
If you have experienced symptoms for coronavirus such as fever within the past 3 days, or loss of smell, loss of taste, dry cough, shortness of breath, lightheadedness, weakness, dizziness, diarrhea, vomiting, slurred speech or seizures within the past 10 days it is important to wait for symptoms to clear before testing for COVID-19 antibodies. This is to ensure the body has had time to produce associated immune system antibodies as well as for the health and safety of others at the testing site.
